Teal Pumpkin Project Encourages Providing Non-Food Treats to Trick-or-Treaters

OKLAHOMA CITY – For the second year in a row, the Food Allergy Research and Education is coordinating the Teal Pumpkin Project which raises awareness of food allergies and promotes the inclusion of all trick-or-treaters by encouraging households to provide non-food treats. Participating households will have a teal-colored pumpkin in front of their home on Halloween night.

According to FARE, there are 15 million Americans living with food allergies.

Candy that may contain peanuts, tree nuts, dairy and other allergens diminish the fun and safety of trick-or-treating for children with food allergies. Non-food treats remove those threats completely.

“Many party favors and dollar store toys make great Halloween treats,” said Diana Rogers Jaeger, a thoughtful gift consultant and co-founder of Sunburst Gifts. “Kids love glow-in-the-dark necklaces and bracelets, and they have the added benefit of making trick-or-treaters more visible at night.”
