The J.M. Smucker company, manufacturers of 9Lives, EverPet and Special Kitty canned cat food products, today announced a recall of products in all three lines due to possible low levels of thiamine, also known as vitamin B1, in the products. The issue was discovered by the Quality Assurance team during review of production records at the manufacturing facility. No illnesses related to this issue have been reported to date and the product is being recalled out of an abundance of caution.

According to the company's news release, low levels of thiamine could lead to the development of a thiamine deficiency, which can cause a loss of appetite, weight loss, over salivation and vomiting, as well as seizures and unstable walking in effected felines. The company recommends a veterinarian should be consulted if your pet is exhibiting any of these symptoms, adding that if it is treated correctly, thiamine deficiency is treatable.

The recall is being conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). A complete list of the affected products can be found at the FDA's website. If you find that you have any of the affected products, the company recommends you call 1-800-828-9980 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. eastern time Monday through Friday or email consumer.relations@jmsmucker.com. Do not feed the food to your cat.

No other products of The J.M. Smucker Company are affected by this recall.
