Ever since the news broke that Shane Black was making The Predator, many of us wondered what exactly we were supposed to call it. It’s not a reboot, because it features new characters in a new environment, and it’s not exactly a sequel either, since none of the characters from the original seem to be returning. Some thought Arnold Schwarzenegger would cameo to tie this movie in with the rest, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen.

While speaking with We Got This Covered, Boyd Holbrook, one of the leads of The Predator, explained how this new movie fits in with the rest of the Predator universe.

I’m currently working on Predator. It’s not a sequel; Shane Black has made something totally new, somehow keeping within the realm of Predator [while also being] absolutely new in terms of the story that we’re talking about today, and rooted in something real. It’s real fresh. I don’t think you’re going to see [Arnold] Schwarzenegger. It would kind of make it a gimmick. It’s horror, science-fiction and a western.

It’s been quite a while since Schwarzenegger led his team against the Predator in 1987, so getting him to reprise the character might be a little tricky. Plus, what Black is doing with the material sounds pretty cool. It’s as if he’s been given a whole studio, A-list actors, and millions of dollars to make a movie of his Predator fanfiction. It’s a universe ripe for expansion, and Black is the one to do it.

The Predator doesn’t yet have a release date, but production starts this month in Vancouver.
