2017 Oscar Predictions: The ScreenCrush Staff Picks the Winners

It’s that time of the year again where we must set aside our personal opinions and favorites to try and guess which movies the Academy will deem the most culturally significant. The days of calling Natalie Portman a Best Actress shoe-in last fall feel like a distant dream, and Lion and Hacksaw Ridge might just lend this year’s Oscars some surprising upsets.

Whoa, These Keanu Reeves Facts Will Blow Your Mind

You know him as Neo from The Matrix and as Ted from Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. But did you know Keanu Reeves has a strange habit of playing guys named John? He was Johnny Utah in the original Point Break, Johnny Mnemonic in, uh, Johnny Mnemonic, and John Wick in John Wick and the new John Wick: Chapter 2. And there are lots more examples. The dude likes playing Johns. As Keanu himself might say: Whoa. That’s just one of the facts featured in the newest episode of You Think You Know Movies!

James Gunn on ‘Guardians Vol. 2,’ New Characters, and Why Thanos Isn’t Back for the Sequel

We’ve got still more coverage from the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 for you. Following our visit to the set, and our conversation with Kevin Feige, here’s the full transcript (lightly edited for length, and removing a few spoilers that Marvel still doesn’t want out in the world) of the press’ lengthy chat with Guardians writer/director James Gunn. Topics included why Thanos and his Infinity Stones won’t show up this time around, how the sequel is both more intimate and more massive in scope, and the mystery character who Gunn originally wrote into the Guardians 2 script treatment, only to cut him (and he did say it was a him) out because there were just two many heroes at that point.

These Are the ‘Star Wars’ Special Editions Facts You’re Looking For

You know that James Earl Jones provided the voice of Darth Vader in the Star Wars films. But did you know when Star Wars was first released in 1977, Jones was not listed in the closing credits? Over the years he’s claimed that the reason for the omission was his belief that he hadn’t done enough work to deserve billing, and later confessed that he worried that if he was credited he would be typecast as a bad guy for the rest of his career. Jones’ name was added to the credits of the film when it was released in 1997 in its “Special Edition.” That’s just one of the Star Wars Special Edition facts featured in the newest episode of You Think You Know Movies!

ScreenCrush’s Extremely Excited 2017 Sundance Film Festival Preview

Weather Underground’s current forecast for Park City, Utah calls for snow on five out of the first six days of this year’s Sundance Film Festival, including a possible (gulp) five to eight inches on Monday. ScreenCrush’s current forecast for Park City, Utah, snow be damned, calls for as many movies as we can cram into those six days while we’re on the ground covering Sundance 2017. Editor-in-Chief Matt Singer and Senior Editor Erin Whitney will be there, doing their best to honor the mailman’s creed: Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat (okay maybe we won’t have to worry about that one), nor gloom of night will keep them from their appointed rounds. (It’s possible a party or two might; it’s probably too early to tell right now.)
