The MCU has been laying the groundwork for Captain America: Civil War for some time now, but there’s another, bigger war in Marvel’s future — one which will take a bit more preparation, as the two-part Avengers: Infinity War will send Phase 3 out in epic fashion, bringing many of our favorite superheroes together in the ultimate battle. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo are currently wrapping things up with Civil War, but they’re already looking ahead to their next big Marvel project, which will unite the MCU…maybe even with the Guardians of the Galaxy in tow.

Speaking with ComicBook.com, the Russo brothers couldn’t confirm who will or won’t be in Infinity War, so when asked about the possibility of seeing the Guardians finally united with the rest of the MCU, Joe Russo said:

That is another one that we would have to reserve as a surprise, but we will say this: People will not be disappointed in the amount of characters in the movie. The concept of Infinity War is that the Marvel universe unites to battle the greatest threat to the world and universe that you’ve ever seen, and we’re going to honor that concept.

As James Gunn has often said in interviews, the Guardians occupy a separate corner of the MCU — they’re connected, but they operate a little more independently with their own style and stories. While Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 likely won’t feature any big crossover appearances and none of those characters are slated to appear in Civil War, we can’t imagine that Infinity War won’t find a way to bring the Guardians into the fold, especially when it comes to facing down a villain with whom they’re already somewhat familiar.

The Russo brothers are re-teaming with their Winter Soldier and Civil War screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely for Infinity War, with the first part arriving on May 4, 2018, followed by Part 2 on May 3, 2019.

But first — Captain America: Civil War hits theaters on May 6.
