Blake Shelton gave a heartfelt performance of "Came Here to Forget" — his song about his relationship with Gwen Stefani — at the 2016 ACM Awards in Las Vegas on Sunday night (April 3).

After helping Luke Bryan on his opening performance, the former co-host slowed things down by taking the stage alone. The ocean served as a back drop to his soulful black and white performance.

"Came Here to Forget" was recorded with Shelton in color and the rest of the scene in gray scale. This trick mixed with his second-to-none vocals made the country singer stand out even more.

The country superstar has just dropped the song as his new single, and it's the first taste fans have had of his upcoming album, If I'm Honest. It is the most personal glimpse fans have yet had into Shelton's life since he and Miranda Lambert announced their divorce in July of 2015.

“I’ve had a lot of music over the years but I don’t think I’ve ever had a song before that’s such a direct look into my life,” Shelton says. “That’s why I’m so excited about this particular song.”

"All the awful things that have happened in my personal life — but the way the year ended is also the greatest of my life,” he adds, evidently referring to his new relationship with Gwen Stefani. “I’m doing what I’m supposed to do, and that’s put all I’ve gone through and put it into music, and I never felt more connected to a record before. When people hear this record, they may not know what happened to me, but they’re gonna know how I felt about it. And that’s exciting for me, to just lay it out there for people.”

If I'm Honest is set for release in May.
