Stephens County Commissioners approved an ordinance Monday night that will, for the first time, allow low-point beer will be served at the Stephens County Fairgrounds. County commissioners approved the proposal by a vote of 2-to-1. Prior to Monday night, there was no policy in place regarding either sales or consumption of beer at the Fairgrounds, so by default, sale of beer was prevented due to liability concerns.

Commissioners see the approval as a possible economic boon for the fairgrounds, in more than just concession sales. Lack of beer sales turned many promoters away for big events like concerts and rodeos. Commissioners hope that the new ordinance will help to attract such events. Organizations such as the PRCA, whose national sponsor is Coors, will now be able offset the cost of their events with beer sales.

The new ordinance now means vendors will be able to sell beer with the appropriate licenses and with approval from the fairgrounds. This is the first time alcohol will be sold at the fairgrounds, and sales will only be of low-point beer.
