As a strong supporter of PETA and the National Humane Society of the United States, it's become public knowledge that Carrie Underwood is an avid animal lover. Despite her hectic schedule juggling a blissful marriage and the demands of being a country music superstar, the 'Blown Away' singer found time over the weekend to make a very special visit to her hometown animal shelter in Checotah, Oklahoma.

"Hanging out at the Checotah animal shelter! Anyone want a kitten?" Underwood tweeted during her visit. "I think we have a few!!! Ha ha!"

Though the singer is a 'mother' of two dogs -- Ace and Penny -- she seemed rather smitten with the kittens on this particular visit, which was made apparent by the photo she posted on the social media website.

"She got all the kittens up on her lap and loved on them," shelter director Kate Paris tells People of Underwood's 45-minute visit. "She really cares a lot for animals."

The country star paid special attention to one stray cat in particular, which had been discovered in a parking lot just earlier that day. "[Carrie] just loved on him," Paris reveals. "All he wanted was somebody to pay attention to him."

Underwood posted a separate photo of her new furry friend, sharing, "Someone left this one at the grocery store."

Though the animal activist makes every attempt to visit the shelter when she heads home to Oklahoma, Underwood's presence at the shelter will no doubt be limited considering her rather exhausting upcoming tour schedule. The North American leg of her Blown Away Tour kicks off Thursday (Sept. 14) in Manchester, N.H., with a whopping 55 stops scheduled before the end of the year.

In celebration of the highly-anticipated road run, the philanthropic singer has pledged donate $1 of each ticket sold to support the Red Cross Disaster Relief fund. Click here for dates.
