Though formed Paw Paw, West Virginia, Asleep At The Wheel defines Texas Red Dirt Country, combining the sounds of Texas Swing and Red Dirt. Formed in 1970 by Ray Benson and Reuben Gosfield. The band found themselves opening for acts like Alice Cooper and Hot Tuna, but their sound was unlike anything heard before. At the encouragement of Willie Nelson, Benson and Gosfield (Lucky Oceans) moved to Austin, TX and fully immersed themselves in the Austin Music Scene. They have performed on the legendary TV program Austin City Limits a record 10 times and even recorded an album with Nelson in 2010 called Willie and the Wheel.
