Brantley Gilbert came to Nashville at age 20, aiming to be a top singer and songwriter, but he almost didn't make it that far. When Brantley was 19, he was involved in a near fatal automobile accident, one that he points to as the turning point in his life. After a night of partying friends, Brantley got behind the wheel of his truck after drinking, and while driving down US Route 129, near his hometown of Jefferson, GA, Gilbert's vehicle veered off the road and into a ditch. After hitting a tall patch of grass, the truck flipped end over end several times before hitting a tree. Gilbert was ejected from the truck through the back window, and according to witnesses, flipped 10 to 15 in the air before landing, miraculously, on his feet.

After being convinced by his mother that he was not lucky, he was blessed, Gilbert began to see things a little differently. He realized there was a plan for him, and that plan included his music. He used it as therapy during his recovery, including writing a song about the incident, a song that would eventually become the title track for his second album, Halfway To Heaven. Gilbert rededicated himself after the accident furthered by the fact that the first person to come upon the singer after the crash, soon died in an auto accident of their own.

In 2005, at age 20, Gilbert made it to Nashville, signed by Warner Chappell Publishing. He wrote songs that appeared on albums by Colt Ford and Jason Aldean, and in 2010 he scored two big hits with Aldean. The title track from Aldean's My Kinda Party album and the subsequent single "Dirt Road Anthem" (which was originally recorded by Gilbert and Ford) reached #2 and #1 respectively.

By this time Gilbert had signed with Ford's Average Joes Entertainment, releasing his debut album, Modern Day Prodigal Son in 2009 and the follow up Halfway to Heaven in 2010. He would sign with Big Machine Records whose subsidiary Valory would re-release the second album under their label. Gilbert would see immediate payoffs from the new label, scoring #1 hits with the first two singles from the Deluxe Edition re-release. His 2014 follow-up Just As I Am scored two more chart toppers, giving Gilbert a total of 8 top-10 single, and 4 that reached the top of the chart.
