On Thursdays, we are proud to present the best unsigned and independent label country artist to be found on Unsigned/Indy Artist Thursday. Sometimes it's a local artist, sometimes we hear of artists "through the grapevine" and others we literally stumble over. Today we feature an artist whose music we stumbled upon while I wondered around Spotify, looking for another artist, and this performer came up.

E.J. Cox was born and raised in Florida and comes from a long line of fiddle players. Cox's musical family includes his great grandfather, grandfather, and grandmother who all played the fiddle, and an aunt who played the piano. Throw in several guitar and banjo picking cousins, and it was a musical jamboree every time the family got together. Self taught and learning by ear, at age seven EJ started playing an old upright piano at his grandparent's lakeside shack and soon discovered a love for singing; Cox started writing songs when he was around 12 or 13, and after high school, he was off to Auburn University, he learned to play guitar and began to take his writing seriously.

Currently residing in the beautiful Pacific Coast town of Santa Barbara, Cox has recently released his debut album River Town, and is playing all along the west coast and Pacific Time Zone in support of the self-produced album. From that album, we get today's featured tune, the second single from the album. E.J. Cox and "Up 'Round Monterey" is today's Unsigned/Indy Artist Thursday Catch of the Day, new music you haven't heard, but you'll want to hear it again.
