‘Catch of the Day’ – Old Dominion – “Snap Back” [Audio]
Today we feature an up-and-coming group who hit a home run in their first at bat, climbing to number 1 on the country chart with their debut single.
Old Dominion was formed based on band members who met in Nashville, but soon discovered they had a lot in common. Two of the band's members, singer Matthew Ramsey and drummer Whit Sellers grew up in Roanoke, VA, though they did not know each other at the time. Ramsey moved to Nashville after graduating from Virginia Commonwealth University; in 2003 he would meet and form a song-writing partnership with keyboard player and guitarist Trevor Rosen.
Sellers on the other hand went off to James Madison University, where he met bass player Geoff Sprung and guitarist Brad Tursi. After graduation from JMU, Sellers headed to Nashville, where Sellers, Sprung and Ramsey met in 2007, forming the earliest incarnation of Old Dominion, taking the name from the nickname of their home state, Virginia.
The members of Old Dominion would keep themselves afloat writing for other artists as they played around the Nashville area. Ramsey wrote the #1 hit "Chainsaw" for the Band Perry, and collaborated with Rosen on songs for Dierks Bentley and Craig Morgan. Rosen also wrote "Neon" for Chris Young and "Better Dig Two" for The Band Perry, while Brad Tursi wrote Tyler Farr's "A Guy Walks Into A Bar" as well as songs for Kenny Chesney, the Randy Rogers Band and the soundtrack of the television series Nashville.
The original make up of the band, singer Ramsey, keyboard/guitarist Rosen, bassist Sprung and drummer Sellers expanded their line-up in 2012, adding bass player Brad Tursi. They released a self-titled EP in 2014, which met with immediate success, selling more than 1,000 copies in its first week. The first single, "Break Up With Him" climbed to the top of the charts the same week the band released their debut, full-length album, Meat and Candy. The album has sold more than 25,000 copies since it's November 6th release.
Today the spotlight falls on the second single from the album. Old Dominion and "Snapback" is today's Catch of the Day, new music you haven't heard, but you'll want to hear it again.
