The son of tejano musician Ricardo Trevino, Rick Trevino turned down a baseball scholarship to Memphis State University and instead stayed home in his home state of Texas to study music in Austin at Texas A&M. In 1991, Paul Jarosik, a representative Sony Records was stranded in Austin because of flooding, and visited a small club were Trevino was playing. Jarosik left Austin with a tape of Trevino's music and passed it on to producer Steve Buckingham, who, after listening to the tape made a special visit to Austin to hear Trevino play, signing the singer immediately to Columbia Records Nashville.

In 1993, Trevino released his debut single "Just Enough Rope" which became the first mainstream country single to be released on both English and Spanish versions. The song led the way for Trevino's debut album Dos Mundos, a title which reflected his Mexican-American heritage. Trevino followed his debut in 1994, with the release of a self-titled album, his only gold album, which feature the top-10 singles "She Can't Say I Didn't Cry" and "Doctor Time".

Trevino released 4 albums with Columbia Nashville, which produced 6 top-10 hits, including his only #1 single "Running Out of Reasons To Run", from his 1996 album Learning As You Go, his final project with Columbia Nashville. When Columbia merged with Sony in 1996, Trevino was transferred to Sony, but released no new material for the label, releasing four compilation albums before leaving the label in 2001.

In 2001, he released the spanish language album Mi Son with Vanguard Records, soon after signing with Warner Bros. Records Nashville. Three albums and no top-40 singles later, Trevino left Warner Bros. in 2011. He recently signed with the independent label Campo Blanco Records, a label from Texas. His first album with the label, Long Gone Coyote is scheduled for release later this year; the first single from the project is in our spotlight today. Rick Trevino and "Cowboys Like Me" is today's Catch of the Day, new music you haven't heard, but you'll wanna hear it again.
