Sometimes songs come along and become hits for reasons beyond those that try to figure those things out; other times its an incredible performance by an artist that takes a song into the stratosphere; and still others become hits just because the song needs to be a hit.

Today's featured song can easily fit into all three of those categories.

During the first decade of the 2000s, Trace Adkins was one of the top superstars in country music. Starting with the release of his debut album Dreamin' Out Load in 1996, Adkins has released 11 studio albums and 3 compilation records with all but 2008's X and third greatest hits package, 2010's The Definitive Greatest Hits: 'Til The Last Shot's Fired being certified gold. These albums have featured 24 top-20 singles, 14 of which have made it into the top-10 and 4 that have made it to #1.

Originally signed by Capitol Records Nashville in 1995, after label executive Scott Hendricks heard him play and signed him on the spot. Adkins called Capitol home for 13 years, releasing 8 albums for the label, before leaving in 2009 to join Toby Keith's Showdog-Universal Records. Adkins didn't meet the success at Showdog that he had previously achieved at Capitol Nashville. He would produce three albums for the label, which would deliver just 2 top-20 singles, only one would reach the top-10. Adkins left his second label after his 2013 album Love Will...

In the meantime, Adkins spent a lot of time working on projects outside of country music. He has appeared in several tv shows and movies, including the 2011 Matthew McConaughey drama The Lincoln Lawyer and the tv comedy Yes Dear, as well as spending a season on The Celebrity Apprentice, setting the show's record for the largest amount raised by a competitor, $1,524,072, which went to his charity, the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network. He returned for the All-star Celebrity Apprentice, where he would become the only participant to make it to the show's finals twice, raising $670,072 for the American Red Cross.

He has also done voice over work for Kentucky Fried Chicken and Firestone as well as becoming the spokesman for Pilot Flying J truck stops in 2012. In March of 2015, he began hosting a weekly countdown show for Sirius/XM radio. In late 2015, Adkins signed with Wheelhouse records, releasing two singles for the label in 2016, while preparing his 12th studio album, Something's Going On, set for release March 31st. We have the latest single, the third from the upcoming album, in our spotlight. Trace Adkins and "Watered Down" is today's Catch of the Day, new music you haven't heard, but you'll need to hear it again.
