Today we feature an artist who recently spent a little time with us here in Lawton, and whose debut single took the longest route to #1 in country music history. An artist who got his first guitar when he was 11 years old, and by the time he became a teen-ager, he began playing alongside much more experienced musicians and learning from them.

William Michael Morgan was born and raised in Vicksburg, MS, and found himself by music, country music in particular, from early on in life. At eleven he received his first guitar as a gift. He practiced, finding himself influenced by classic country artists. By the time he turned 13, he had gotten good enough that he began playing with other local musicians, most of who were much more experienced than Morgan. It was apparent right away that the singer had incredible promise, his parents steering his career while they both balanced full-time jobs. At age 14, Morgan was invited to play the Louisiana Hayride, giving the singer exposure across the southwest and mid-south. It was a relationship that would carry on for four years, until Morgan headed to Nashville.

Several opportunities came to Morgan during his Hayride days. The first, was the opportunity to meet and learn from some of the best songwriters in the music business. He had received several invitations to sit in on songwriting sessions, so at age 19, the singer headed to Music City. One of the artists he met, and was taken under the wing of, was Mark Chesnutt. He, along with Keith Whitley and George Jones, heavily influenced the young singer, and led to his signing both a publishing deal and recording contract with Warner Bros.

On August 11th, 2015, the Catch of the Day debut a new song by an artist no one had heard of, William Michael Morgan. This started the ride of a single, "I Met A Girl", co-written by Sam Hunt, that would eventually climb into the top spot on the county charts, after taking an incredible 58 week ride up the Country Singles chart, topping out on October 15th, 2016. This success would coincide with the release of Morgan's debut album, "Vinyl" on September 30th.
