June 1, 2012 With the Summer fast approaching, and temperatures climbing, we find ourselves wanting to find ways to cool down. You could spend your time at the beach, or pool side, or perhaps you'd like to come in from the sun and enjoy one of the awesome movies coming out this Summer.
This weekend at the movies a beloved fairy tale gets a whole new twist, and Mexican rebels take up arms. Olé!
If aliens and other creepy creatures are your thing, you’ll groove on this week’s new movie offerings.
‘Battleship‘ was supposed to be the film that nudged ‘The Avengers‘ out of the number one spot at the box office, but instead you can just go ahead and insert your own “You sank my battleship!” joke here. ‘The Avengers’ didn’t cling to the top spot for the third week in a row, it dominated the top spot for the third week in a row, taking in another $55 million for a grand domestic total of $457 million.
This weekend, you’ll have your choice between a goofy comedy, watching things blow up, and a tale about the joys and perils of new parenthood.
Poor Barnabas Collins never stood a chance. Tim Burton’s ‘Dark Shadows‘ found itself clobbered to death over the weekend courtesy of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, who rode a perfect cocktail of hype and stellar word-of-mouth to an unprecedented second weekend. It’s no longer a question of whether or not ‘The Avengers‘ will be one of the biggest movies of all time, mainly because it already is one of the biggest movies of all time: after only nineteen days, it’s crossed the $1 billion mark. The question we should be pondering now is whether or not it will become the biggest movie of all time.
Like cockroaches lurking in the darkness waiting for their chance to attack the fruits of someone else’s labor, writer/directors Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer (‘Date Movie,’ ‘Epic Movie,’ ‘Disaster Movie,’ et al.) sit quietly, antennae twitching, primed for their attack. Their targets this time around: ‘The Hunger Games‘ and ‘The Avengers.’
Limited releases aside, there’s only one movie you need to worry about seeing this weekend — Tim Burton’s ‘Dark Shadows.’

‘Snow White and the Huntsman‘ has a lot going against it. It’s the second ‘Snow White’ movie to come in just a few months (‘Mirror, Mirror’ hit theaters in late March), it’s attempting to put a modern, action-movie spin on the classic fairy tale, and it stars Kristen Stewart, an actress frequently criticized for her wooden line readings.
Yet despite all this, we can’t help but think ‘Snow White’ looks pretty damn good.
Practically the entire world is absolutely in love with ‘The Avengers‘ right now. It’s one of the highest grossing movies out there and it started off the summer movie season with a big bang.
Now this new image of ‘The Avengers’ may not pack the punch of Hulk smashing or Thor’s hammer like the others, but it will make you understand how incredibly hot most of these actors have been since their youth. We say most because, well…you’ll see for yourself when you see one of their 80s hairdos.
