'The Compassionate Friends' of Lawton, OK held a fundraising walk this past Saturday, April 4th at Elmer Thomas Park in Lawton. The group's goal for the walk was to raise funds to help continue their mission, and to raise awareness of their group in order to help those parents that have suffered the loss of a child.

While the turnout was possibly affected by the chill of the early morning air and was not what the group had hoped for, they appreciated the opportunity to meet friends, old and new, and to spread the message of the organization.

Compassionate Friends, which meets the first Thursday of every month, is dedicated the support and counseling of parents who have suffered the tragic loss of a child, whether adult or juvenile. The non-profit organization's members have all suffered the pain off this loss and look to help parents cope with the psychological, physical, emotional, family and social effects of such a loss. They welcome new members and hope they can help those in a time of need, due to loss.

Come join those that have made it through that first birthday, first death anniversary, first holiday, and so many other firsts that you have not yet reached. You will learn coping skills from other bereaved parents who, like you, never thought they'd survive. There are no strangers at TCF meetings—only friends you have not yet met. They will be here as long as you need support. Even though you are newly bereaved and the road is long, they invite you to walk with them for as long as the journey takes.

If you would like to attend the groups next meeting, or would like information about the  Compassionate Friends, please contact Julie Mayfied at 580 510-0562.
