With a movie as epic as Star Wars: The Force Awakens, you know there has to be lots of footage that didn’t make the final cut. Reports have been out there for a while now about several scenes that were cut from the film, and while you will get to see some of those scenes when it eventually hits DVD and Blu-ray, J.J. Abrams says you shouldn’t hold out hope for an extended version of The Force Awakens.

Abrams was on hand at the TCA press tour to promote his new Hulu series 11.22.63, based on the Stephen King novel and starring James Franco. When you have a chance to speak with Abrams, it’s hard not to ask the director about his other recently released project, you know the one — Star Wars. EW inquired about the possibility of an extended cut of the film, to which Abrams replied:

There will be deleted scenes, but not an extended version.

This isn’t completely shocking, given that many directors feel as though a final, theatrical version of their film should be the only director’s cut there is, while other directors (typically those who struggle over ratings and runtimes) indulge in director’s cuts and extended versions — it also lets the studio release multiple versions of the film on home video and…profit.

When asked how long his original version of the film was, pre-cuts, Abrams gave an idea of how much deleted material exists:

I don’t know what the longest cut was.Probably, if it were with credits, close to two hours and 50 minutes was the first cut.

The runtime of The Force Awakens is two hours and 15 minutes, so that’s about 35 minutes of deleted scenes we could see on the DVD / Blu-ray release, but it’s not likely that Lucasfilm or Abrams would want to include all of it. Deleted scenes are often deleted for a good reason.
