History of the Race

This year, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation celebrates the 28th anniversary of the Komen Race for the Cure®, the largest series of 5k runs/fitness walks in the world. This year is the Second annual Komen Lawton/Ft Sill Race for the Cure® in Lawton/Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. Approximately 1000 people are expected to participate.

The first event of its kind, the Komen Race for the Cure® was created in 1983 by Nancy Brinker, who established the Komen Foundation to honor the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died from breast cancer at the age of 36. In 30 years, the Komen Race for the Cure® has grown from one local race with 800 participants in Dallas, Texas, to a series of more than 100 races, with more than 1.5 million people expected to participate in 2013. Today, the Komen Race for the Cure® series raises significant funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrating breast cancer survivorship in addition to honoring those who have lost their battle with the disease. At each race event, breast cancer survivors in pink caps and pink T-shirts are celebrated and honored for their strength and courage. Through events like the Komen Lawton Fort Sill Race for the Cure®, the Central and Western Oklahoma Affiliate has invested over $9 million in community breast health programs in Central and Western Oklahoma. Up to 75 percent of net proceeds generated by the Affiliate stay in our 47 county service area. Up to 75 percent of the net income from each race stays in the community to fund local breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment projects. The remaining income goes to the national Susan G. Komen for the Cure Grants Program to fund research.

Survivors

Zeta Tau Alpha sponsors a Breast Cancer Survivor Recognition Program. Through it, complimentary pink caps and pink T-shirts are provided to all breast cancer survivors who would like to be recognized as such during the race. The Recognition Program also provides “In Memory of” and “In Celebration of” back signs for the Race. These are given to individuals who wish to honor loved ones they’ve lost to breast cancer, or those who have survived the disease. They are also available at the registration booth the day of the Race. It is possible supplies will run short, so everyone is encouraged to pick up their items at the Registration Center prior to race day. Survivors and their families are also invited for breakfast at the exclusive Pink Hat Café the morning of the Race. The survivors’ pink caps serve as their family’s ticket for admission to this special event. All survivors are also urged to attend the Survivor Ceremony following the Race.
