At first glance, Ex Machina might be most notable for the pairing of upcoming Star Wars: Episode 7 actors Oscar Issac and Domhnall Gleeson, but it's clear upon watching this new trailer, that the upcoming sci-fi film is much more than that.

Imagine if Steve Jobs was a hippie living in the woods of Oregon and instead of making iPhones and iPads, he was making artificially intelligent robots. Now, imagine that this Steve Jobs invited a worker from the Genius Bar out to this massive compound to check out the latest model. That's about where you start with Ex Machina, a film that feels like its plot was ripped from a 1960s sci-fi novel (and we mean that in the best possible way. It's a love triangle with suspense, action, smarts and a really beautiful robot.

Ex Machina is the directorial debut of Alex Garland, the talented screenwriter of 28 Days Later, Sunshine, Never Let Me Go and Dredd and will make its debut at the 2015 SXSW Film Festival.

Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson), a programmer at an internet-search giant, wins a competition to spend a week at the private mountain estate of the company's brilliant and reclusive CEO, Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac). Upon his arrival, Caleb learns that Nathan has chosen him to be the human component in a Turing Test—charging him with evaluating the capabilities, and ultimately the consciousness, of Nathan’s latest experiment in artificial intelligence. That experiment is Ava (Alicia Vikander), a breathtaking A.I. whose emotional intelligence proves more sophisticated — and more deceptive — than the two men could have imagined.

Ex Machina opens in theaters on April 10.
