Years ago, when The Fast and Furious franchise first began, there’s no way we could’ve fathomed the myriad ways Universal would rework the words “fast” and “furious” into sequel titles. “No,” they said, “We will not simply call these movies The Fast and the Furious 1 - 8. We are creatives!” That creativity peaked with 2 Fast 2 Furious, (prayer emoji hands for whoever originally came up with that one), then along the way they sort of lost their mojo. But now, finally, with the eight installment we’re back on track with a brand new f-word added to the title. So long “fast,” this movie is all about fate!

The Fate of the Furious is the official title of the upcoming F. Gary Gray film, which we’ve been calling Fast 8 as we’ve anxiously awaited a snazzy title treatment. It's a pretty ridiculous one, and sounds like someone screwed up pronouncing “fast” in a development meeting and they just went with it. A brand new teaser arrived online Friday morning announcing the new title and teasing (as teasers do) a full trailer expected out this weekend. In those brief 15 seconds we get a quick look at Charlize Theron’s villain, Michelle Rodriquez’ Letty sporting a huge gun, Tyrese Gibson’s Roman racing across the ice in a snowmobile, and Vin Diesel doing his usual Dom glare. The action isn’t too crazy, but I bet we’ll get a full look at that in Sunday’s trailer. Here’s the full synopsis:

Now that Dom and Letty are on their honeymoon and Brian and Mia have retired from the game—and the rest of the crew has been exonerated—the globetrotting team has found a semblance of a normal life. But when a mysterious woman (Oscar winner Charlize Theron) seduces Dom into the world of crime he can’t seem to escape and a betrayal of those closest to him, they will face trials that will test them as never before.

From the shores of Cuba and the streets of New York City to the icy plains off the arctic Barents Sea, our elite force will crisscross the globe to stop an anarchist from unleashing chaos on the world’s stage…and to bring home the man who made them a family.

The Fate of the Furious (I giggle inside every time I type that) also features Dwayne Johnson’s Hobbs, Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw, Luadcris’ Tej, Jordana Brewster’s Mia, Nathalie Emmanuel’s Ramsay, plus newcomers Kurt Russell, Scott Eastwood, and Helen Mirren (!!). Stay tuned for more coming this weekend. The film hits theaters April 14, 2017.
