FGL ‘Cruise’ To 6 Million Downloads – Today In Country Music History [VIDEO]

Florida-Georgia Line’s single, “Cruise” became the best-selling digital country single of all-time with 6.3 million copies sold. The song spent 24 weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart, more than any other song in history.
"Cruise" also spent 34 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at #4, the record for the slowest climb into the top 5 in history, eclipsing Lonestar’s 30 week climb with “Amazed”.

The Dixie Chicks and Alan Jackson each receive four nods a piece when the Grammy nominations are announced.
The Chicks were nominated for Album of the Year and Country Album of the Year (Home), Best Country Performance by Group or Duo (“Long Time Gone”) and Country Instumental (“Lil Jack Slade”).
Jackson got nods for Song of the Year, Country Song of the Year, Country Male Performance (“Where Were You When The World Stopped Turning") and Country Album (Drive).
1999
Singer Johnny Rodriguez was indicted on a murder charge as the result of an August, 1998, shooting death in Texas.
Rodriguez was later acquitted of murder, stating he thought his friend, Israel “Bosco” Borrego was a burglar and he shot him in self-defense.

Alan Jackson’s album Honky Tonk Christmas was certified platinum. The title track, "A Holly Jolly Christmas" and "I Only Want You for Christmas" charted.
LeAnn Rimes’ album You Light Up My Life was certified quadruple platinum. Two singles were released from the album, "You Light Up My Life" (#34 - certified gold by the RIAA) and "On the Side of Angels" (#4).

Charley Pride becomes the first African-American solo singer to perform on the Grand Ole Opry, following an introduction from Ernest Tubb.
Pride sings "The Snakes Crawl At Night" and "I Can't Help It (If I'm Still In Love With You)".

Singer Jack Greene is born on this date in 1930 in Maryville, Tennessee. The "Jolly Green Giant" plays drums for Ernest Tubb before a solo career makes him a Grand Ole Opry member. "There Goes My Everything" nets him three honors from the Country Music Association in 1967
Greene died at home in March of 2013, from complications of Alzheimer's disease, two months after his 83rd birthday.
