The death of musical icon Prince on April 21 left artists from every genre mourning the loss -- including Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood. During a show in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday (April 23), the husband and wife covered Prince's massive hit "Purple Rain" -- or, really, their audience did.

A massive Prince fan (and, apparently, a former member of his fan club), Yearwood donned a frilly purple jacket and took the lead for the song. Prior to beginning the tune, she told the crowd that she and Brooks have "done a lot of Prince in our soundchecks, but we've never had the nerve to do it live."

"Please take this with the love that it's meant," Yearwood said. "We’re just gonna do a little piece of this, because trust me, I know who 'the Purple One' is ... and he's goin', 'Don't try it! Don't try it!'”

While Yearwood handled the song's first verse herself, the background vocalists and the fans jumped in at the chorus, and the crowd roared with support. Press play on the video above to watch.

Prince was born Prince Rogers Nelson in Minneapolis on June 7, 1958. He released 29 studio albums throughout his career, won seven Grammys and one Oscar and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. He was 57 at the time of his death.

Brooks and Yearwood are currently out on the road together on Brooks' World Tour. Their next set of shows is in Des Moines, Iowa.
