Golden Gate Bridge Celebrates 75 Years + Trivia! [VIDEO]

Sunday Marks the 75th Anniversary of one of the only ways to get to San Francisco, California, The Golden Gate Bridge.  It’s a huge accomplishment for a bridge that ‘couldn’t be built’.

Peter Ginter

Many wanted a bridge to connect San Francisco to Marin, but experts believed that with the high winds that swirl across the San Francisco Bay and the nearly 7,000 feet that the bridge would have to cover, there was no way to make it happen.  In fact, until a 1917 proposal from engineer Joseph Strauss, stating that a bridge could indeed be built, and built for only $17 million dollars (a far cry from the estimated $100 million projected by the city),  the idea of a bridge was little more than a dream.

Construction began in 1933 and the Golden Gate Bridge opened on this date in 1937.  Here are some little known facts about the Golden Gate Bridge.  There are 4 that are correct and one that isn’t.  Can you tell which one is the lie?

1.  The name of the color of the Golden Gate Bridge is called International Orange.

2.  Thirty-eight people are needed to maintain the paint on the Bridge.

3.  It takes 5,200 gallons of paint to cover the Golden Gate Bridge

4.  Around 200,000 people crossed the Bridge on Opening Day

5.  More people die by suicide at the Golden Gate Bridge than at any other site in the world.

Happy 75th Birthday to what Frommers travel guide says is “possibly the most beautiful, certainly the most photographed, bridge in the world”.
