As it turns out, Jackie Kennedy didn’t just have great taste in fashion and furnishings — she was also something of a cinephile. A newly-released list reveals every film the former First Lady watched during her all-too-brief time in the White House, from home movies and TV specials (including her own) to James Bond and, in an eyebrow-raising move, the Marilyn Monroe classic The Misfits.

Matt Novak has done some excellent work in the past couple of years over at Gizmodo, where he’s published comprehensive lists of every film watched by former presidents like Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter during their time in the White House. An anonymous source furnished Novak with the private diaries of projectionist Paul Fischer, who kept painstaking records of every film he screened during his time at the White House, where he served under every administration from Dwight Eisenhower to Ronald Reagan.

The list of films screened for Jackie Kennedy is notable in that, up until now, Novak has limited his focus to the POTUS. Pablo Larrain’s mesmerizing new film, starring Natalie Portman in the title role as the bereaved Mrs. Kennedy in the days following her husband’s assassination, hits theaters in December — so this list might be of particular interest for fans of the former First Lady and / or cinema.

The full list can be found in the original article, but here are a few of the highlights, including French films like Last Year at Marienbad (which Jackie Kennedy found to be quite stylish, while John himself walked out early on) and Jules and Jim, and classics such as Sabrina, The Misfits (starring Marilyn Monroe, with whom JFK was heavily rumored to have carried on an affair), Dangerous Liaisons and Freud (a biopic about the famed psychoanalyst directed by John Huston):

  • The Misfits – February 3, 1961
  • La Dolce Vita – April 25, 1961
  • Blood and Roses – September 20, 1961
  • Dangerous Liaisons – January 31, 1962
  • Test screening of PT-109 – April 7, 1962 (The film was based on JFK’s experiences fighting in World War II. Cliff Robertson played the JFK role, and the film bombed at the box office — no pun intended.)
  • Last Year at Marienbad – March 7, 1962
  • West Side Story – April 28, 1962
  • Jules and Jim – June 21, 1962
  • Sabrina – October 30, 1962
  • Dr. No – November 28, 1962
  • 55 Days at Peking – November 10, 1963 (JFK watched this film with Jackie and four guests; it was the last film he watched in the White House.)

55 Days at Peking was the last film screened for the Kennedys, but it was not the last time Jackie used the White House theatre. Seven days after John was assassinated in Dallas, Jackie held a party in the theatre on November 29, 1963 for John Jr. and Caroline’s birthday.

Jackie hits theaters on December 2.
