“I don’t want America to think I wasn’t ready,” said ‘Duets‘ contestant J Rome just before taking the stage with Jennifer Nettles for the first perform of tonight’s live episode of the popular reality competition show. “I don’t want them to say the pressure was on and he didn’t deliver.”

According to the remaining three judges, the clear frontrunner did indeed deliver with his performance of the 2011 pop hit ‘Breakeven’ by the Script.

“I think it’s a great song,” says Robin Thicke. “I wouldn’t think it would be right for your voice, but the fact you made it your own is a testament to your talent.”

Kelly Clarkson, who has been a clear supporter of J Rome throughout the entire season, also praised the young hopeful’s willingness to tackle a song outside his comfort zone. “I’m mad. I’m mad — you’re so good,” said the Texas native.

“You did so well. It’s not as exciting as other songs. You chose a song that I didn’t think you would choose, but it was perfect,” added Clarkson.

Much like the his celebrity mentor peers, John Legend offered J Rome similar critical praise. “I’ve decided everything is right for your voice,” said the ‘Ordinary People’ singer. “Your chemistry is really infectious and cool,’ referring to his relationship with the Sugarland lead singer.

“J Rome came into this competition already ready in my opinion,” Nettles told the cameras just before taking the stage. “This was a stepping stone to take it to the next level.”

When asked what keeps him from cracking under the pressure of being in the Top 3, the singer remarked “prayer” with a laugh. J Rome also gave Nettles props saying, “the confidence that Jennifer has in me and what I have in her.”
