Kacey Musgraves is gearing up to release her much-anticipated sophomore album, and she's letting Taste of Country readers go inside the writing and recording of one of the new tracks in this exclusive preview.

"Family Is Family" mines the particular kind of wry, observational humor that is one of Musgraves' trademarks as a songwriter, sketching out a cast of characters that absolutely anyone who's ever been exasperated by their family members will recognize: "Family is family, in church or in prison / You get what you get and you don't get to pick 'em / They might smoke like chimneys, but give you their kidneys / Yeah, friends come in handy, but family is family."

"'Family Is Family' was a really fun one to write," Musgraves says, "because we got to sit there and dream up and laugh about, just all these little nuances that happen in families."

It's a song that no other artist in contemporary country music would have written.

"Kacey is very specific when it comes to the kind of song she wants to write, or the way she wants it to feel," co-producer Shane McAnally says. "She sort of has it mapped out in her head by the time we start to work on something."

"She's one of those I'm almost kind of jealous of," co-producer Luke Laird admits, "because at such a young age, she knows exactly what she wants to say and how she wants to say it."

"Line by line, there's not one person in that song that's not real," McAnally says with a laugh, while Laird adds, "It's one of the most clever, well-written songs on this record by far. That's one of those songs, I'm like, 'Oh, I wish I wrote that.'"

Musgraves' new album, Pageant Material, is set for release on June 23. It is currently available for pre-order.
