FOX and Will Forte’s Last Man on Earth most always keeps its pop-culture references on the surface, save for anyone noticing Betty Draper in their midsts. Last year paid what seemed to be a quick homage to January JonesMad Men past, but Sunday’s Season 3 premiere saw Betty finally get even with an awesome cameo.

You’re warned of full spoilers for Sunday’s The Last Man on Earth Season 3 premiere, “General Breast Theme With Cobras” (it makes sense in context), but the 2016 opener picked up precisely where the Season 2 finale left off. That is to say, with Mark Boone Jr.’s hazmat-suited Pat and two unidentified companions preparing to infiltrate the group’s compound.

It didn’t take too long for the two groups to end up in an armed standoff, the culmination of which saw the shotgun-happy Melissa firing into one of the two masked intruders. And who, do you ask, lay under the mask? Why, none other than Jones’ former Mad Men husband, Jon Hamm!

Yes, like Will Ferrell’s Gordon before him, Hamm’s Darrell only appeared long enough for an unfortunate end, followed by an awkward burial. It certainly seemed like a bit of catharsis for January Jones, though as Will Forte tells TVInsider, the Mad Men connection hadn’t initially occurred to him:

That’s the funny thing—I wasn’t even thinking about the Mad Men connection. Jon is somebody I’ve known for a long time, since he hosted SNL, and he’s always up for doing interesting, fun things. He came with me to Jimmy Fallon when I tested my beard for bacteria. He and Rachel Dratch came and held my hands [while I got the results]. So I thought, I should see if Jon would ever be interested in doing this. And he instantly was like, ‘Oh, I’m in!’ It was so great.

[The writers] were like, ‘That’s so cool: Betty is going to shoot Don! And I was like, ‘Oh my God. Yeah!’ I can’t even take credit for that aspect of that. It’s really a [thing] I somehow missed. He was so wonderful to come in and do us the favor. He’s so funny and always supportive and wonderful. I’m glad that the moment turned out as well as it did, because [this way], he can go, ‘Oh, I’m glad I did that!’

Hamm seems to be developing an entire resume of minor roles in comedy series, whether on Parks and Recreation, Wet Hot American Summer or Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. It’s always possible that Hamm could return in a small flashback role, especially as Mark Boone Jr. and Kenneth Choi were set up for recurring roles (the former’s fate being somewhat unclear), but Hamm seems to relish in the one-off gag.

In the meantime, The Last Man on Earth Season 3 will continue on FOX Sundays, so what other Mad Men references might we look forward to?
