Lawton City officials report that though sign-ups are slower than anticipated, resident response to the city's proposed curbside residential recycling program can still be the success they have hoped.

As of the end of the week, 1,045 residents have submitted application forms to  participate in the city's recycling program. For $7 a month, city contractors will come to their homes to pick-up containers filled with recyclable materials. According to the proposed plan, the city needs 5,000 residents to sign up for the program before implementation.

Public Works Director Larry Wolcott said more than 1,000 residents have taken advantage of fliers mailed to residential utility customers, or completed the application form available on the City of Lawton website. While some people are procrasting, Walcott noted that it's just "a matter of when" those people will submit application, siting a definite increase in signups after the city's revenue services division began sending out fliers in residential utility bills.

Until 2015, Lawton had a recycling program in which residents were able to take their recyclables to centers that were established in multiple locations throughout the city, but abuses at those recycling centers led the City Council to cancel the program.
