Trailing 22-21 with 1:38 seconds left in the game, the Lawton Wolverines lined up for the one play that every one of its fans has been waiting for all season long. And like she had been doing it all her life, Caitlyn Cox did not disappoint the Wolverine faithful.

Stalled on a fourth and 1 at the Midwest City 15 yard line, Wolverine head coach Randy Breeze called on his junior place kicker to lift her teammates past the Mid West City Bombers and calm, cool and collected, Cox nailed a 32 yard field goal with plenty of distance to give the Wolverines a 24-22 win over the Midwest City Bombers in 6AII-2 play Friday night.

It looked like it was going to be a good old fashioned shootout early. Midwest City drove the opening drive 67 yards, aided by a 48 yard play action pass to take an early 7-0 lead. Lawton answered right back with a 66 yard drive of their own, capped by a 1 yard touch down run by Mahlik Hannah to tie the score at 7 a piece.

After a MWC turnover, the Wolverines struck quickly as Jack Meservy hit Kalin Sandler with a 48 yard touch down pass and Lawton led 14-7. But before the end of the first quarter, Midwest City struck again as the Bombers Alik Sezer caught a 10 yard swing pass and scored to tie the game at 14.

The Wolverines and Bombers were tied at 14 at halftime, and it remained that way into the fourth quarter when Darreyl Patterson scored from 5-yards out to give LHS a 21-14 lead. But Midwest City responded, with Sezer scoring on a 6-yard touchdown run. The Bombers then converted a contested 2-point conversion to take a 22-21 lead with under four minutes remaining. The Lawton sideline had protested the conversion, as Midwest City had originally kicked an extra point to tie the score, but the Wolverines were flagged for a neutral zone violation, which the Bombers originally declined. But before the ensuing kick-off, the Midwest City coaching staff changed their minds and were allowed to take the point off the board and go for two.

With 3:38, Lawton High took the ensuing kick off to the 28 yard line, then preceded to drive the ball to the Bomber 15 yard line to set up Cox's game winning heroics. The Wolverines are now 8-1, 5-0 in District play, and are in the driver's seat for the District title. The Wolverines can lock up the District next Friday with a win at Choctaw.
