We need a modern day John Wayne!  Where have all the heroes gone?

Growing up a 70's child I remember enjoying the red dirt road that we lived on, the adventures that I would take with my dogs through the Missouri woods, and I also remember all of the things we used to do that are now 'forbidden' for safety reasons.

I think we have lost something in being so 'safe'.  We have shielded our children from valuable learning lessons that can only be learned from trial and error.  The kids of generations past would think that the kids of today are somewhat sheltered and citified!

While growing up, I enjoyed a more than fanatical dose of 'The Duke', that is John Wayne.  He was everything and everywhere, the epitome of 'The Man's Man'.

Tough, compassionate, stern, fair, gritty, loving, Godly, Hellion, Right, but never ever wrong, this is the image of John Wayne that I idolized for the duration of my childhood and even into my adult life.

We need a modern day John Wayne!  Where have all the heroes gone?

Something as monumental as swimming lessons, is forever etched in my mind.  See how the Duke did it in the movie Hondo from the 1953 classic. It just makes me laugh.
