The lyrics to Thomas Rhett‘s debut single ‘Something to Do With My Hands’ are as fun and lovable as the 22-year-old star on the rise. The son of Rhett Akins inked his first record deal last year on Valory Music Co. and is anticipating the release of his first full-length album later this summer. Meanwhile, fans just can’t seem to get enough of his new single which he co-wrote with Lee Miller and Chris Stapleton.

“I think it was about eight or 10 months ago when we wrote this song,” Thomas Rhett tells Taste of Country. “Lee and Chris were two guys that I had been writing with a bunch. We kind of booked an every Wednesday kind of thing to write together. We got in there one day, and we were starting to throw our ideas out there of what we wanted to write, and Lee had spit out the title idea of ‘I Need Something to Do With My Hands.’ Me and Chris kind of looked at each other, and we were like, ‘Alright! That is what we’re writing!’ Chris came up with this melody, and the song really took off from there.”

Well I smoke and I fish / But not near enough to satisfy an itch / All the girls understand / I need something to do with my hands / I don’t work on a car /  And I’m as bad at pool as I am at throwing darts / And golf, not a fan / But I need something to do with my hands,” they wrote in the song’s opening lyrics.

The song continued on from there with various options of what he can do with his hands.

So maybe I could stick ‘em in your pockets / Run ‘em through your hair and we can get to rockin’ / There you are and baby here I am / And I need something to do with my hands,” he sings in the song’s chorus.

“As a songwriter, you either have five hour days or you have an hour day,” Rhett says. “This time, it was kind of one of those deals where we actually finished the song in about an hour. I got to live with the worktape a little while, and we finally demoed it. The reason I knew it was a good song was because a couple of weeks after we wrote that song, I still liked it [laughs]! Some other songs that I write can leave my memory pretty quick after I write them, so I know I have something cool in my hands when I actually like it a couple of weeks later.”
