Under a very typical hot summer August Thursday afternoon, the MacArthur Highlanders got their final tune-up before they start their regular season at Mustang during the "Mustang Pigskin Preview" featuring 10 teams from around the state.

The action for the boys on the hill started with rapid fire sessions of on-and-off offence and defensive sets mixing it up with teams from Westmoore, Edmond North, and host of the preview Mustang. This will give the coaching staff a better look at personnel heading into their final preseason week.

After a brief rest and meal provided by the Mustang booster club, the Highlanders took to the field with a half of football against the Mustang Broncos. The Highlanders started a bit flat according to head coach Brett Manning as the Broncos found their way into the end zone on the first play from scrimmage with Mustang missing the PAT and starting the scrimmage 6-0.

During the first quarter the defense was tested, but was led by several good plays by senior linebacker Javi Laboy. The Highlanders found their way into the end zone for the first time from a connection we should be seeing a lot of this year - quarterback Will Collins to Gary McKnight Jr. The final touchdown came from the same connection of the dynamic duo with only 3 seconds left in the scrimmage, ending the game with a final score of 20-14.

It was really a true tale of two quarters, according to Coach Manning who loved his teams fight, resilience and there willingness to keep fighting until the very end. The boys did not quit fighting. With only the 3 seconds left on the clock the ball was turned over with an interception by Barry Williams to end the contest. The scrimmage started with a touchdown on the very first play and a Big Mac interception on the very last play. But know this, there will be more work left after the coaches get done reviewing this contest on video.
