It's time to add another ring to the circus that is called the Dallas Cowboys.

Michael Sam, the first openly gay player in the history of the NFL, has signed a contract to join the practice squad of the Dallas Cowboys.

Sam, a defensive end from the University of Missouri, was cut from the final roster of the St. Louis Rams last Saturday. The Rams selected Sam with the 249th overall pick (7th round) in the 2014 draft. He played in all four pre-season games for St. Louis, totaling 11 solo tackles and 3 sacks. Sam cleared waivers 24 hours after he was cut by the Rams, allowing him to sign with any team. He comes to Dallas to join a defense that has been predicted to be one of the worst in the league.

"It has all happened so quickly, but it's exciting, I just wanna get back to playing football you know," Sam said. "I haven't had chance to speak to any of my family yet, not even my mom, but I will. I never followed the Cowboys growing up because I never had a team. I am a fan of defenses and Dallas need some help, that's why I'm going."

Sam, a native of Hitchcock, Texas, will begin the season on the Cowboys' practice squad. A NFL practice squad is a group of ten players that work with the team throughout the week. Practice squad members are usually forced to imitate the opponent for the starting players, as well as fill in for injured players when needed. Many analysts predict that the Cowboys will eventually bring Sam up to the 53-man roster, due to the Dallas defense's many holes.

On  February 9, 2014 in an interview with ESPN's "Outside The Lines", Sam announced his homosexuality. Once drafted, Sam's St. Louis Rams jersey was the 6th-best seller in the NFL from April 1 through July 17. Sam was assigned number 46 for his practice jersey in Dallas, but will not wear the same number if called up to the active roster.

We are proud to announce that NewsTalk 1290 AM will be the new broadcast home of the Dallas Cowboys in the Wichita Falls area for the 2014 season. Click Here for more information.
