New Study Says Heart Attacks are More Difficult to Detect in Women

My Mother was 56 years old when she had her heart attack.  I called her and asked her if she remembered what it was like.  She told me “I remember feeling scared.  I could see my heart jumping in my chest.  I didn’t know what to do and I tried to get in touch with your Dad but couldn’t reach him.  Remember, we didn’t have 911 back in 1986.”  She went on to tell me “I remember going into denial.  I started to bake chocolate chip cookies to take my mind off it and waited for your Dad to get home from work.”  Yes, she baked chocolate chip cookies to “take her mind off of it”.  All of this and the clinic was only 4 blocks from our house.  Mom ended up having triple bypass surgery and I’m happy to say she will be celebrating her 82nd birthday in April.

According to a recently released study conducted by The Journal of the American Medical Association heart attacks are the number-one killer of women because often the signs go unnoticed.  The study revealed that women were more likely than men to have a heart attack without experiencing the chest pain.  The study also found that women have a higher mortality rate than men suffering heart attacks.

Here, cardiologist Dr. JoAnne Foody describes the symptoms of a heart attack in a woman…

Comanche County Memorial Hospital, along with the Lawton Family YMCA, Heart & Vascular Center, Townsquare Media and KSWO-TV would like to invite all women to join us for a fun, informative gathering Don’t Miss A Beat Celebration on Wednesday, February 29th.  We will learn the 911 dance and the signs & symptoms of a heart attack.  Cookies and punch will be served and there will be free shirts and giveaways (while supplies last).  Get all the details on this event on our Events page.

Don’t wait until it’s too late!  You have lots of people depending on you!
