It almost time to start thinking about back to school. And that means shopping for clothes and all of the other assorted items you will need for school. State of Oklahoma will offer one tax free weekend event during 2013. It applies to clothing and shoes and is intended to coincide with back to school shopping, when many parents stock up on kids' clothing and footwear.

This year the tax free weekend is August 2 - 4. You may get tax free savings on the following items only.

  • Clothing and shoes
  • Priced under $100

A tip before you rush out to shop during the tax free weekend: Practice good common sense. This will help you save more during the weekend. Compare prices at several different stores and use coupons whenever possible.

Do not over spend just because it is tax free weekend. The regular sales tax in Oklahoma is 4.5% - so that is how much you will save along with your local sales tax if applicable. By shopping around and using coupons, you might find the items are better off bought prior to the tax free weekend or even afterwards.

If you just cannot get enough tax free shopping done here in Oklahoma, our neighbors to the south will have their annual tax free weekend August 9 -11. Information on the Texas tax free weekend is available here.
