On May 28, LeVar Burton, better known as Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge from 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' and the host of the PBS program 'Reading Rainbow' launched a Kickstarter campaign to bring back the educational program.

'Reading Rainbow' stopped airing on PBS in 2006 when the channel faced financial trouble. Burton then relaunched Reading Rainbow as an iPod app which then climbed up to be the #1 educational app.

Sensing that the app wasn't enough, Burton set a goal of $1,000,000 through Kickstarter to "bring Reading Rainbow's unlimited library of interactive books and video field trips to kids everywhere and help classrooms most in need."

In only 12 hours the goal was reached.

"Just being on tablets simply won't get the job done for way too many of our families," Burton said. "This Kickstarter campaign is about reaching every web-connected child. Universal access. Thousands of more books than what we have now. And hundreds of more video field trips."

Burton had set a deadline of July 2nd to reach the goal and it seems he more than surpassed it.
