Johnny Cash might not be the first name you think of when you hear "rock 'n' roll," but the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will be honoring the country icon this fall. Cash has been selected as the 2016 Music Masters honoree.

Each year, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's Music Masters series salutes a deserving, legendary artist with a week of talks, workshops and a tribute concert. (In 2014, the Everly Brothers were the year's honorees.)

"Throughout his career, Johnny Cash, transcended genre boundaries and embraced rock and roll, rockabilly, blues, folk and gospel," says Jason Hanley, vice president of education and visitor engagement for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. "What's so amazing about Cash is that almost every musician you ask will tell you that they love his music -- from the rockabilly and country of his Sun Records recordings in the 1950s, and his outlaw image and his famous concerts at Folsom Prison and San Quentin, to his enduring love for June Carter Cash and their music work together ... or his later American Recordings music that frequently saw him putting his own unique musical fingerprints on some of rocks newest sounds ..."

In 1992, Cash was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

“I realized some of my first dreams when I was actually owning recordings of some of my heroes, people that had influenced me and made an impression on my life,” Cash recalled during his speech. “I’m extremely proud of [this honor], and whether I belong here or not, I’m going to … show it off at home.”

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame tells Cleveland.com that members of the Cash family are expected to attend the tribute concert, which will take place on Oct. 21 at Playhouse Square's State Theatre at 7:30PM. Complete details on the week of Music Masters events, as well as tickets for the tribute show, will be announced in September, but premium seats and VIP packages are now available; for more information, call 216-515-1201.
