Joey + Rory singer-songwriter Rory Feek has been documenting his wife Joey's final days extensively, both in posts to his blog and in pictures. In a new interview, he explains his motivations for sharing such an intimate and painful part of their lives.

Joey was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer in June of 2015, and after a long and painful battle, she decided to end her treatments after doctors told her there was nothing more they could do. She is in hospice care in her hometown of Alexandria, Ind., as she faces the end of her life, and Rory has documented her struggles extensively in his This Life I Live blog.

"I am a songwriter who hasn't been writing songs in the last couple of years, so sitting down and writing these stories about our lives has been a wonderful creative outlet for me," Rory tells People. "Each blog post has also been therapeutic for me, in the sense that there are some parts of what we're going through that I'm not sure what to make of. Writing about it helps me to sort out what I feel and how to respond to the twists and turns that life has taken us on."

He has also chronicled their joys and struggles through a number of photos of Joey and the precious time she is getting to share with their daughter Indiana, who will turn 2 in February. The family got to spend what Rory described as an "amazing" last Christmas together, and recently celebrated Indy's birthday early, according to People. Rory says those special moments will live on.

"Without realizing I was doing it, God has allowed me to capture hours and hours of Joey and her life at home on the farm, raising Indiana and playing music," he explains. "I can't help but believe that those clips will be an important part of keeping Joey's memory alive in Indy's heart."
