Sheryl Crow and Grace Potter teamed up at the 2016 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in New York City Friday night (April 8) to perform an unexpected tribute to Eagles leader Glenn Frey.

The pair harmonized beautifully on the classic "New Kid in Town," which hit No. 1 on the Billboard singles chart when it was released as the first single from the Eagles' 1976 album Hotel California. The song also won a Grammy. Frey wrote the song with Don Henley and J.D. Souther, and sang lead on the track.

Crow — whose early career before becoming a star included a stint singing harmony vocals in Henley's solo band — sang lead and played acoustic guitar, with Potter contributing flawless harmonies and an additional guitarist providing the acoustic lead guitar fills.

Frey passed away in January at the age of 67 from complications from rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis and pneumonia. His Eagles bandmates teamed with Jackson Browne to perform "Take It Easy" at the 2016 Grammy Awards in February in tribute to their departed friend.

Henley also remembered Frey via Facebook, saying his longtime musical partner was "like a brother to me" and acknowledging that Frey was "the one who started it all" for the Eagles.

"He was funny, bullheaded, mercurial, generous, deeply talented and driven. He loved his wife and kids more than anything," Henley adds. "We are all in a state of shock, disbelief and profound sorrow."

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted Deep Purple, Steve Miller, Chicago and Cheap Trick on Friday night, and there was also a a surprise tribute to David Bowie from former Talking Heads maestro David Byrne.
