After gaining the required petition signatures, Oklahoma officials have decided not to allow people to vote on medical marijuana this November. It's a piece of legislation that has been shelved for at least two more years.

Attorney General Pruitt cited a lack of 'qualifying medical conditions' written in the most recent draft, but many are calling shenanigans and oppression. Let's explore real reasons something like this isn't being put to the people.

Possibility 1: People blame the religious right.

For almost 100 years, the government has told the people marijuana is bad. Since the 1980's, kids in school have been, and excuse my use of this normally ill-used word, indoctrinated with government propaganda to curb drug use, presumably before it starts. Having said that, it's not just the religious right that wants to keep weed down. This idea of 'weed=bad' has been thrown at all of us for our entire lives. Criticizing one religion, or all is purely statistical. X amount of people don't want to legalize pot, Y amount of people go to church, Z amount of people fall in both columns. Math is messing with your rhetoric. Stop letting it.

Possibility 2: State officials are looking for a better way to 'go green.'

There is a slight chance that your politicians are looking for the best possible way to legally bring medical marijuana to the public. Look at early adopters like California... It's very well documented how easy it is to gain a pot-prescription in that state. It's not just debilitating, exploratory, or terminal illnesses benefiting from the state green card... It's minor things, that are often faked in order to gain this medication. Much like Florida and painkillers, Californians seem to greatly abuse medical marijuana.

Possibility 3: State officials want liberal hippies to stay out of the polls in a POTUS ballot.

This year, we will vote for a new president. Choices are extremely limited, and the majority bases are very far apart on common issues. That means the moderate population in the middle is bigger than it has been in the past. This move to shelve the weed vote could be a coup against encouraging 'liberals' and 'dirty hippies' to the polls in November. The belief being if there would be a chance of seeing a blue county on the state map. While this would be extremely unthinkable, it would be brilliant dirty politics.

Still, people are protesting for their right to vote on this issue. Some want it, others don't, the rest of us are kind of stuck in the middle.

Personally, I don't have a dog in this fight, and find myself between two different points of view. This plant has been making huge waves in the medicinal fields. Labeling itself the treatment and cure for many ailments over the years. One can only imagine the possibilities science can unlock for it... But the libertarian in me believes Oklahoma is selling itself short settling for medical-only marijuana legislation. This is the land of the free, let's make it that way.

At the same time... that same libertarian inside of me knows that not everything can come down to popular vote, and the OK gov is dumb for presenting that idea. The United States is not a democracy. Even though we settle ties this way, we are not ruled by majority. Otherwise, things that I care about, like my 2A rights and Sunday-Gunday, might fall to the wayside in a gun-control popular vote. This is why we have our constitution. It guarantees our rights. Meaning nobody can take away your rights, even if the majority of the population wants to.

We'll probably never know the true story behind this fight, but a delay in the vote is certainly better than a squashing of the idea.
