2007 Curing The Inner Child
Billy Currington travels to Hawaii to begin therapy for anger issues related to the abuse he suffered from a stepfather in childhood. The abuser was actually the subject of Currington's first hit, "Walk A Little Straighter."
“My challenge in life is my anger,” he told the Nashville Tennessean. “I’d be little Billy for two seconds, yelling and blowing up. And in those instances, that rage can destroy relationships, whether it’s with a girlfriend or a business partner or a fan. When you are taught to hate, you carry that with you,” Currington told People magazine in 2007. “Even today, I call myself 98% laid back, but 2% is Little Billy — my inner child that’s hurt, sad and furious because he was never taken care of.”
This wouldn't be the last time Currington would face anger management issues. In April of 2013 the singer pled guilty to elderly abuse charges in connection with an incident in which the singer was originally accused of making terroristic threats against the 70-year old captain of a tour boat that led tourists near his home.
On the day in question, Currington began chasing the captain's boat on his return trip, threatening to harm the captain and using "colorful language." Currington denied the charge, telling police he only asked the captain to "back off." Currington pled no contest in exchange for probation and a $1000 fine.
