Not to be outdone by the big 'Captain America 3'/Civil War announcement from earlier this week, Warner Bros. dropped some major superhero news of their own. They've confirmed their 2017, 2018 and 2019 superhero movies as well as announced some new casting for members of the new Justice League!

There's a lot of news here, but let's get right to it... 'Suicide Squad' will be the first DC movie released after 'Batman vs. Superman' in the summer of 2016. 'Wonder Woman' and 'Justice League' have both been announced for 2017 release dates. Following in 2018 will be 'Aquaman' starring Jason Momoa and 'The Flash' starring the just-announced Ezra Miller ('The Perks of Being a Wallflower'). (It's unclear at this point if Miller will be part of 'Justice League' or 'Batman vs. Superman' but we'll assume he will be.)

'Shazam' (starring The Rock as Black Adam) will hit theaters in 2019 along with 'Justice League 2.' Also, in the works but with no set release date are a Cyborg movie, a 'Green Lantern' reboot and new standalone Superman and Batman movies starring Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck.

So, based on the previously released list of dates, the current DC schedule looks like this:

'Suicide Squad' – 08/05/16
'Justice League' – 06/23/17
'Wonder Woman' – 11/17/17
'The Flash' or 'Aquaman' – 03/23/18
'The Flash' or 'Aquaman' – 07/27/18
'Shazam' – 04/05/19
'Justice League 2' – 06/14/19
Untitled DC Film – 04/03/20
Untitled DC Film – 06/19/20

Well, while we all were patiently waiting for the official announcement of Jason Momoa as Aquaman (which was the worst kept secret), the Ezra Miller news was unexpected. There were rumors that Scoot McNairy, with his green-screened legs, would be The Flash in 'Batman vs. Superman' but Miller was a name we hadn't even heard attached to the role and frankly, it's a good one. He's a great young actor and we're honestly surprised he hasn't already been snatched up by an existing franchise. (Trivia: Warner Bros. was at one time looking at Miller to star in their 'Akira' reboot that eventually went kaput.)

We also know that 'Suicide Squad' will be directed by David Ayer ('Fury'). As far as directors go, there was no confirmation that Zack Snyder would return for the 'Justice League' sequel, but that seems likely. (UPDATE: Snyder is confirmed to direct both 'Justice League' movies, which will be shot concurrently and released as "Part 1" and "Part 2.")

As for those two 2020 release dates that are yet unclaimed, we'll assume those will be reserved for either the 'Cyborg' or 'Green Lantern' movies, or perhaps the standalone Superman and Batman movies.

This certainly seems...ambitious. We've said this before, but what if the new reboot in 'Batman vs. Superman' doesn't catch on like they had hoped. To plan movies through 2020 in a universe that hasn't even started yet seems presumptuous, but given Marvel's position, Warner Bros. and DC don't have time to sit around and wait for their universe to develop.

It also sounds like a lot of work for the film's stars. Currently, the 'Avengers' movies are spaced three years apart. WB is bullish and only spacing out the 'Batman vs. Superman' and the two 'Justice League' movies by two years. Considering how interested we were in Ben Affleck's budding career as a director, we'll be curious to see how much time he'll have to devote to directing with all his free time sapped by running around in a batsuit.

So, what do you think? We certainly like the casting of Miller and Momoa, but do these DC announcements get you as excited as what is going on in the Marvel universe?

'Batman vs. Superman' is scheduled to open in theaters on March 25, 2016.
