Weekend Box Office: ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1′ Takes a Bite Out of First Place

In news that will likely surprise exactly no one, ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1′ glittered and gored its way to a spectacular $139.5 million premiere this weekend, giving the latest film in the popular franchise the fifth-largest domestic opening in history.

Another box office newbie, the animated ‘Happy Feet 2,’ brought in $22 million for second place, while last week’s champ ‘Immortals’ came in third with $12.2 million.

Adam Sandler’s ‘Jack And Jill’ and the Antonio Banderas-voiced cartoon cat ‘Puss In Boots’ took fourth and fifth, selling $12 million and $10.7 million in tickets, respectively.

Here’s a list of the top 10 movies at the box office Friday through Sunday with estimated grosses, along with how much each movie has made since its release:

1. ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1′ – $139.5 million, new release
2. ‘Happy Feet 2′ – $22 million, new release
3. ‘Immortals’ – $12.2 million, $52.9 million total
4. ‘Jack and Jill’ – $12 million, $41 million total
5. ‘Puss In Boots’ – $10.7 million, $122.3 million total
6. ‘Tower Heist’ – $6.9 million, $53.3 million total
7. ‘J. Edgar’ – $5.9 million, $20.6 million total
8. ‘A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas’ – $2.9 million, $28.3 million total
9. ‘In Time’ – $1.6 million, $33.4 million total
10. ‘The Descendants’ – $1.3 million, new release
