The Usual Suspects Get New Looks In IDW’s ‘Clue’ [ECCC ’17]
Announced at Emerald City Comicon on Friday, IDW is adding another Hasbro property to their comics lineup in June, with the launch of a Clue comic based on the classic board game. Written by Paul Allor with art by Nelson Dániel, the book is a humorous murder mystery in keeping with the tone of the franchise, but with a new and modernized versions of the classic characters.
Garfield The Cat Is Not Non-Binary (But Apparently We Thought He Was)
It turns that Garfield, legendary comic strip cat, is a boy after all. “Garfield is male,” creator Jim Davis said to The Washington Post. Davis then added the non sequitur, “He has a girlfriend, Arlene," as if only people who are male have girlfriends. But putting that bit of heterosexism aside, how did we get to the point where this was a statement that needed making?
It turns out that Jim Davis, presumably without meaning to, started that himself.
Good Thing: Women’s Wrestling Dominates ‘Elimination Chamber’
The long-promised "Women's Revolution" in wrestling may finally take root this weekend. Sunday February 12 is the Elimination Chamber live event on the WWE Network, the first branded Pay-Per-View (a colloquial word these days, but one that's stuck) for Smackdown Live in 2017. Of the seven matches announced for the show, three are women's singles matches. In fact, there's only one men's singles match, with the other three being multi-man gimmick matches, including the titular main event in the elimination chamber. And that's a big deal.
Comics Alliance Gift Guide: What To Buy For A Pro Wrestling Fan
Here at Comics Alliance, as you may have noticed in the past, a lot of us love professional wrestling --- almost as much as we love comics. We've put together a selection of gifts for any wrestling fans you need to shop for this holiday season. There are some comics (because a lot of people who love one love the other), but also art, T-shirts, prose books, and more.
No One Will Hear You Scream As James Stokoe Takes On ‘Aliens’ In ‘Dead Orbit’
James Stokoe, the creator of Orc Stain, knows a few things about monsters, so it's apt that he's taking on the Aliens franchise as writer and artist on Dead Orbit, a four-issue miniseries from Dark Horse that launches April 26, 2017.
Race Down The Road To Wrestlemania With Playmates’ WWE Nitro Vehicles
If you're like me, you've at some point said to yourself, "Gosh, I sure do love the Undertaker, but I wish he was a little more like Rat Fink!" If so, you're in luck! Playmates' new WWE Nitro Machines line of toys features an outsized Undertaker popping out of the roof of a tricked out purple hearse, leading the way with his scythe-topped cane like he's in a race against Dracula's Dragster.
Give ‘Em Elle: More All-Female Reboots Please
Over the weekend, I saw Ghostbusters. I loved it, but I’m not here to review it. Obviously one of the things that everyone has talked about is the female cast. There’s been a lot of backlash against it, and a lot of people defending the choice, and a plenty saying it shouldn’t matter. But honestly, I think it does matter, and I’m all in favor of it. In fact, I want to see more women-dominated reboots of previously male-dominated properties.
Here’s the thing: We need more movies with woman-led casts, and that makes a movie like this even more exciting, but there’s more to it than that. Changing up the cast automatically gives the movie a freshness it wouldn’t have had with men.
Everything Old is New Again in ‘Captain America: Steve Rogers #1′ [Preview]
The newly young Steve Rogers is back as Captain America on May 25, with the release of Captain America: Steve Rogers #1, by Nick Spencer and Jesus Saiz. As we've discussed before, this means there are now two Captains America, and two Captain America titles, with Captain America: Sam Wilson continuing alongside this book.
There's also a prologue to the new title that will be available for free as part of Free Comic Book Day on May 7.
‘From Parts Unknown’ Kickstarter Project Explores Wrestling Through Comics
From Parts Unknown is a comics anthology about pro wrestling, which is being funded by a newly-launched Kickstarter campaign. The project is the brainchild of writer G. Brett Williams and former Marvel editor Lauren Sankovitch, and features work by professional wrestler Christopher Daniels, filmmakers Jen and Sylvia Soska, and comics creators including Joe Keatinge, Ed Luce, and Jason Latour. The cover features a painting by WWE's favorite artist Rob Schamberger.
Cast Party: Who Should Star in an ‘Uncle Scrooge’ Movie?
Welcome to Cast Party, the feature that imagines a world with even more live action comic book adaptations than we currently have, and comes up with arguably the best casting suggestions you’re ever going to find for the movies and shows we wish could exist. This week we're doing one that's been in the back of my mind for a while: A Disney Uncle Scrooge movie.
This movie will of course be an epic, globe-trotting adventure for the whole family. It'll be based primarily on the comics by Carl Barks and Don Rosa, but I've incorporated elements and characters from the classic Ducktales TV series, mostly because they already solved some of the problems of adaptation. Uncle Scrooge himself would be the first to point out that it's wasteful to reinvent the wheel.
Amazons in Art: Celebrating the Wonder Woman of H. G. Peter
We don't know what led to William Moulton Marston receiving sole credit for the creation of Wonder Woman, with no acknowledgement of artist H.G. Peter's contribution, but the truth is that Wonder Woman would not be who she is without Peter. We've assembled a gallery of Peter's work to pay tribute on the occasion of his birthday, and to give readers a broad sense of his style.
Disney Reveals First Image from 2017 ‘Ducktales’ Reboot
Life is like a hurricane, with all these reboots and revivals coming at us. It's a duck-blur. But today on Twitter, Disney got everyone's attention by releasing the first promotional image from the new incarnation of Ducktales, which arrives on Disney XD in 2017. The image was first tweeted from the Twitter account of Disney D23, the official Disney fan club, and was then shared by other official Disney sources.
