Best American Roots Song is a fairly new category at the Grammy Awards, approved by the Grammys' Board of Trustees in 2013. The first-ever winners in this category, which is awarded to songwriters, were Edie Brickell and Steve Martin in 2014, and Rosanne Cash took home the prize in 2015.
