Goodwill in Oklahoma is gearing up for another winter season. Just before cold weather starts, they help Oklahomans who struggle to keep warm during the winter months by hosting an annual free coat drive.

Starting Wednesday, Nov. 13, Goodwill Industries of Southwest Oklahoma and North Texas, Inc. will be handing out free coats, for both adults and children, to Oklahomans in need. The coat drive is happening until Thursday, November 14 or until supplies have run out.

Those in need can visit the Lawton, Altus, Chickasha and Duncan locations to get a free coat. The drive is reserved only for those there at the store; you cannot call ahead to reserve a coat or get one via phone or online.

What To Expect and Why They Do It

In the previous years, Goodwill has been able to give several hundred coats to Oklahomans all over the state. Since they collect coats all throughout the year, they usually have plenty to go around. Of course, if others still have coats they would like to donate, they just need to drop them off to a participating location.

Although the drive is not just for Oklahoma's homeless, they are unfortunately one of the largest populations who struggle with staying warm during the winter. Oklahoma's homeless population has increased recently. Out of the homeless population in the state, about 35.1% of them are unsheltered.

Low income families also struggle with being able to keep their families comfortable during the winter months. Whether it be because of a costly electric bill or homes that aren't able to stay warm, finances tend to make everything a lot more difficult during the winter. But thankfully, Goodwill's coat drive is completely free.
