These NFL Quarterbacks Played High School Football in Texas
Next week the NFL is officially kicking off and 20% of the starting quarterbacks in the league all got their start playing under the Friday night lights here in Texas.
Many Texas high schools had their first games this week and college football is getting underway as well. We have to wait just a little longer for the NFL to start with the Dallas Cowboys playing this coming Thursday. I saw a stat this week that 1/5 of the NFL starting quarterbacks are from Texas. Let's see how they did as kids in Texas.
Patrick Mahomes: Whitehouse High School in White House, Texas
He had 4,619 passing yards, 50 passing touchdowns, 948 rushing yards, and 15 rushing touchdowns as a senior in high school. He would stay in Texas for his college career committing to Texas Tech University.
Kyler Murray: Allen High School in Allen, Texas
As a senior in 2014, he was the Gatorade Football Player of the Year and became the first player to be named Mr. Texas Football twice. His team won three straight state championships and 43 games in a row. He missed one start during this streak and finished his career with a perfect 42–0 record as a starting quarterback. Kyler would stay in Texas to start his career in college at Texas A&M, but would transfer to The University of Oklahoma as a sophomore.
Matthew Stafford: Highland Park High School in Dallas, Texas
In 2005, Stafford led his team to a perfect 15–0 record and won the UIL 4A Division I State Championship. During the playoff run, Stafford beat Ryan Mallett's Texarkana Texas 38–31, as well as Jevan Snead's Stephenville 41–38. Stafford had over 4,000 yards passing despite not playing in the first three games of the season due to a knee injury. Matthew would not play college football in Texas and spent his entire collegiate career at The University of Georgia.
Baker Mayfield: Lake Travis High School in Austin, Texas
He led Lake Travis to a 25–2 record in two seasons and won the 2011 4A State Championship. He finished his high school football career totaling 6,255 passing yards, 67 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. Baker would start his college career in Texas at Texas Tech University before decided to transfer to The University of Oklahoma as sophomore.
Jalen Hurts: Channelview High School in Channelview, Texas
As a senior, he passed for 2,384 yards with 26 touchdown passes and rushed for 1,391 yards and 25 touchdowns. Hurts was a second-team all-district selection as a sophomore and was named the District 21-6A Overall MVP as a junior during his high school playing years. Jalen would not play college football in Texas, he spent three years at Alabama, before deciding to transfer to Oklahoma as a senior.
Cam Ward: Columbia High School in West Columbia, Texas
As a junior, he completed 72 of 124 passes for 1,070 yards and seven touchdowns for the Columbia football team. As a senior, Ward averaged only 12 pass attempts per game due to playing in Columbia's Wing T offense. He threw for just 948 yards and 8 touchdowns during his last year in high school. Ward would start his college career at Incarnate Word in San Antonio, he would spend two seasons at Washington State after that, before officially finishing his career at The University of Miami.
Who's the Next Big Quarterback to Come Out of Texas?
According to ESPN, the next big quarterback that got their start playing high school football in Texas is John Mateer. He's the new quarterback for the Oklahoma Sooners who grew up playing football in Little Elm, Texas.
