The list of finalists for the job was narrowed down to four. If you’re worried that you missed out on the vote, don’t. It’s not a decision that was made not by the citizens but by City Council and Mayor Oscar Leeser.  After a drawn-out and arduous selection process, the Council voted to give the job to Mack by a vote of 6 to 2.

Here are a few fun and useful facts about El Paso’s new city manager.

Dionne Mack has 28 years of experience in public service. She has been the Deputy City Manager for Quality of Life since 2017. Before that, she had worked for seven years in the El Paso government. Prior to coming to El Paso in 2010, Mack had worked for 14 years for the City of Brooklyn, New York.

Mack began her career in public service as a New York City librarian. Eventually, she became the head of the Brooklyn Public Library Crown Heights Branch. She was the first African-American to become the head of a major library in New York State in 2007.

The City Manager selection process was not without controversy.  City Rep. Josh Acevedo has criticized the process for not being transparent enough. Acevedo had moved to delay the selection until early 2025. Council was deadlocked on the delay at 4 to 4 with Mayor Oscar Leeser casting the tie-breaking vote.

The two NO votes came from City Reps. Joe Molinar and Art Fierro.

Here’s what Mayor Leeser had to say about the new City Manager: “ Dionne Mack has shown exceptional leadership and a deep commitment to enhancing the quality of life for all El Paso residents. Her experience and vision for the City make her the right choice to guide El Paso into a bright and prosperous future.”
