It hasn’t been a great week for Johnny Depp. By now you’ve probably heard about his Trump assassination joke that’s garnered mounds of controversy. And while that story, and the actor’s apology, have gotten the most attention in the media, that’s not the only development in Depp news.
This afternoon, director James Wan shared a new photo of Amber Heard’s Mera in Aquaman, and lo and behold, color has arrived in the DCEU at last, and we saw it, and it was good. Well, hopefully it’s good. Wan has a solid track record, and he proved his blockbuster action chops with Furious 7, but we reserve the right to remain skeptical that this, uh, splash of color (sorry) means that the DCEU will magically become a place where “fun” things happen.
Magic Mike was a movie about strippers trying to make ends meet in the midst of the Great Recession, the difficulty of modern romance, and the dangers of drug use. Magic Mike XXL is a movie about strippers stripping. And not a whole lot else.
